Lazy Susan 4.10
is a cool 1988 DOS menu / frontend by GetC Software.
I recently watched an episode of LGR in which he explored two 80s
Packard Bell PCs. There was a segment where we could see a very obscure
DOS menu prog called "Lazy Susan 4.10" by GetC Software, that also
seemed to be password protected. LGR mentions that he hopes it can be
hacked and he has kindly uploaded the contents of the old HDD to
archive. This really poked my interest, as I am a real nut for anything
DOS and obscure, especially IF it would turn out to be something useful.
So I did a lot of searching online, but wow, there was absolutely
nothing to find about it, not on archive.org, not winworld.com, not
vetusware OR discmaster! There was just one google hit, and it had to do
with LGRs video. So instead I downloaded the program he had posted to
archive, in hope of some luck cracking it. And well... Let's just say
that I through some awesome skills managed to crack it, and let us not
mention at all the fact that you could just delete the file named
"LSCONFIG.SYS", and the program will start up as fresh. I did in fact
check some files in hex, for any clues on the password but found only
some rather funny strings. Anyway, the program is now as new, no
password until you enter a new one yourself. I set the options to show
the help section on screen (or with the "?" key), and set the screen
saver to 2 minutes. The program writes a new config file only when you
add progs.
What we have here is nothing but a real 80s gem of a program! It is for
all intents and purposes a totally rad DOS frontend / launcher menu
system! You can add/delete menus and programs, make descriptions for
them, custom help text entries, and a title that will show on the top of
the program. There are settings for screen saver (indeed a handy feature
for DOS!), password protection, color or monochrome setting, macros, and
navigation is very easy. If you want to you can enable lockscreen with
password, set new path for your menu files, enable "Fast Video" (not
sure what that does) and optionally make a log file. After you run a
program from your custom menu, DOS will return you to "Lazy Susan". Now
that I have spent some time with this software I have to say that it is
just brilliant for a DOS enthusiast or a retro gamer who wants to have
quick access to games or other programs. It is slick, customizeable and
fast. I have already set up a cool list of my favorites in "Lazy Susan
4.10", and I thank LGR very much for sharing this in the first place!
Would love to find out more about the company and title itself. Please
see the included "Readme" file for notes on installation/setup. Try it!
