"Western Front" was the
next wargame in the SSI Gary Grigsby series after "Second Front". It
built further one the SF engine but added a new UI and mouse control,
which was well received at the time. Like "Second Front" it takes place
in World War II, beginning at the landings in Italy, proceeding onto
Operation Overlord and the D-Day landing, the breakout from Normandy and
later also the Battle of the Bulge. The game plays a lot like the
previous one, and uses more or less the same graphic system with some
small changes to map assets and unit icon layouts. This made it easier
for me to develop new graphics, as a lot of the work was already done in
the mod for "Second Front". There are some changes though and a
different palette to work with, and the unit icons are perhaps the most
different from the previous mod. There is also new terrain graphics and
improved representations of seasons and weather. Like SF, this game
really deserved a new title screen and I am very satisfied with how the
new one came out. It is
based on the original box art. |
